Activity of the Month: Letter Writing

Research activities in Revelation don't have to be elaborate to be effective.  One of the simplest yet powerful ways to get people out of the direct question and answer dynamic and into the heart of a matter is to ask them to write a letter to someone else. The trick with letter writing activities is to set them up in a way that makes participants feel invested in their letter.

To make this happen you need to establish two important things:

  • The recipient of the letter must be someone worthy of writing.
  • Participants need to be made to feel that the letter will be read and acted upon.

Here's an example:

Dear Credit Card Company CEO

Today we are going to do something I suspect you have thought of doing, but may have never actually done...write a  letter to the CEO of the company that provides your main credit card. And in this activity we are going to imagine that the CEO will take your letter to heart and make the changes you request.

You can tell him or him what you want in a credit card and are not getting. You can write about how they can improve in their service. You can tell them what they are doing wrong or what they doing right. You can talk about how the rewards are working, or what different kinds of rewards you would like. You can write about how you feel about their advertisements. You can write anything you want them to know. So fire away....

This activity is as powerful as it is simple, and we've seen tremendous success with it.  You can adjust the activity to nearly any topic, just by changing the recipient of the letter.

Revelation is a great platform for Letter Writing Activities, as well as many different kinds of activities that can help you go more in-depth with your participants.
